Good afternoon!
It is a real delight to attend the Summit and meet all the prominent scientists here. On behalf of Ambassador Zheng Zeguang, I would like to extend warm congratulations to the convening of today』s summit.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the UK, fruitful exchanges and cooperation in various fields have been carried out and brought tangible benefits to people of both countries. In the midst of profound and complex changes of the world, China and the UK have maintained dialogue and communication, and expanded mutually beneficial cooperation. Among them, cooperation in science technology and innovation has played a key role.
Over the past decade, China’s sci-tech cause has experienced major historic, holistic and structural changes. China has become an important player in international cutting-edge innovation and a major contributor to solving global challenges. According to the 「Nature Index 2023」, China’s adjusted share of publications in the 82 selected major academic journals surpassed the US for the first time to take the top spot.
China and the UK are complementary in STI strengths. In the past decade, the number of co-authored papers by Chinese and British researchers showed exponential growth and rose to the 2nd position globally. Data for 2022 suggests that China-UK joint research contribution to UK research output has risen to 11.4% of papers. Collaboration between China and the UK has enhanced S&T research capacity and productivity of both countries, and provided new development opportunities for both sides.
There are great potentials for China-UK cooperation in areas like green and low-carbon technologies, advanced agriculture, Antimicrobial Resistance research, biodiversity, entrepreneurship and etc. Many significant and pragmatic China-UK joint initiatives in STI were carried out in recent years. The two sides jointly launched flagship challenge programmes in agriculture, healthy ageing and One-Health. Remarkable results have been achieved through these collaborative programs. We have confidence that, China-UK cooperation in STI will play an increasingly importance role in tackling global challenges such as climate change, public health, food security and so on.
Today』s Summit will undoubtedly contribute to STI exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. The Chinese Embassy in the UK will as always support to further exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation in STI between China and the UK, injecting more positive energy into the development of China-UK relations.
