敦煌自古以來就是絲綢之路上的重要關口，是東西方文化交流融匯之地。佛教自印度產生之後向東傳播進入中原地區的第一站就是敦煌，自漢代開始就有僧人在這裡翻譯佛經，公元4世紀就有僧人開始在敦煌開鑿石窟，並用彩塑和壁畫裝飾石窟。這一佛教活動一直持續到公元14世紀，在敦煌及其周邊地區保存下來了莫高窟、榆林窟、西千佛洞、東千佛洞等多個石窟群，共800多個石窟，50,000多平方米壁畫。這些石窟藝術集建築、彩塑和壁畫於一體，是中古時期絲綢之路東西方文化交流的優秀文化遺產。
